Since the end of the 19th century, the skyscraper, which is a big part of what makes Manhattan stand out, has been a big part of New York City's identity. Despite the Great Depression, some of the world's tallest skyscrapers were built in Manhattan in the 1930s. These included many Art Deco masterpieces that are still part of the city's skyline, including the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and 30 Rockefeller Plaza, which is the centre of Rockefeller Center.
