Fully equipped just before World War I boom, the Belfast was carrying the British navy in siege against the Germans. In 1939, the ship crashed into a German mine and took two years to repair. In November 1942, the ship was put into operation again with modern weapons, radar system and iron armor. The ship continued to participate in many wars until, in 1971, the government decided to put the HMS Belfast in a conservation campaign and turn the ship into a museum. The ship was fixed at the Thames River, near Tower Bridge and opened to visitors in October 1971.
