He's also painted walls throughout Australia, Thailand, Cambodia and Brazil. His style is instantly recognisable to many Wellingtonians; 'Rutu' joins a series of commissions across the capital. The sky father Ranginui and earth mother Papatuanuku existed in darkness until they were separated by one of their sons, Tāne Mahuta (god of forests and birds) who pushed them apart. 'Ban Shark Finning' was installed in 2013, as a protest against the controversial fishing practice. The protest worked and it's been illegal for fishers to remove fins from sharks since 2014."},{"type":"text","content":"BMD was a duo of Damin Radford Scott and Andre J Steel. Since disbanding, their work has slowly become rarer as buildings are replaced across the country."},{"type":"text","content":"Milarky is still producing work and has even collaborated with Dside in New Plymouth. Ashken was one of several European-trained jewellers who moved to Aotearoa and transformed its contemporary jewellery-making scene. These three sculptures from 2001 are based on the tools of navigation traditionally used across Polynesia. The three shapes represent a manu (birds head), a waka (canoe) and a tūāhu (an altar of stones).
