Let's take a moment to appreciate this iconic building that stands tall in the heart of our campus. Can you believe this building is more than 40 years old? The Tower has a rich history and has been a hub of activity since its inception.\n\nWe are now in the Level 4 lobby of the Tower, which is a vibrant space used for various events and activities throughout the year. One such event is the Bluebird brekkie bar, where the UTS Students Association provides free meals for students. And, if you're looking for a unique study space, you should definitely check out the informal study spaces on levels 5 and 6, where you can find the famous disco-light escalators!\n\nThe Great Hall on level 5 is where you'll find UTS graduations and other special events, such as the UTS fashion show, where design students showcase their work to industry and the public. And, let's not forget the many student services that are located on the lower levels, including medical services, counselling, and the Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research, which provides support for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.\n\nDid you know that the Tower was designed by the NSW Government Architect and was once part of the NSW Institute of Technology, which became UTS in 1988? And, despite being voted the Ugliest Building in Sydney in an online poll, it's also a loved Sydney icon and a prominent landmark in the CBD skyline. During academic sessions, you'll find pop-ups and face-to-face help from key services here, ready to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.\n\nAs you walk around the corner, you'll come across UTS Careers, a drop-in service for students seeking help with resumes, career counselling, job search skills, and interview skills.\n\nThe double helix stairs, one of the building's most striking features, can be seen just ahead of you. The unique dual sets of stairs connect levels 4 to 7 and were inspired by the double helix structure of human DNA. Not only are they a visual marvel, but they also allow for easy movement through the building without relying on lifts.\n\nYou can also find three world-first large collaborative classrooms on levels 5, 6, and 7, with the two largest holding 350 students. These classrooms were designed by UTS academics to support active and collaborative learning, which has been shown to improve learning outcomes.\n\nThe UTS Library, spanning levels 7 to 9, offers a variety of indoor group and individual study spaces, including two outdoor terraces. If you're in need of a quiet place to study, head to level 9 for silent study. This building is one of the most iconic and innovative buildings on campus, and we are in for a real treat today. Let's start by taking a look at the exterior. Did you notice anything special about the screens around the building? Yes, that's right! The pattern of binary code spells out 'University of Technology Sydney Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.'\n\nAs we head inside, you'll see the large internal atrium that maximizes natural light and encourages active movement. The network of internal stairs, which some say resemble the Hogwarts staircases from Harry Potter, is a highlight for many students. And trust me, a walk up to level 12 for a spectacular view is a must!\n\nBut the real magic of Building 11 is in its high-tech facilities. One of the most unique spaces is the Data Arena, an interactive data visualisation facility that projects images on a 360-degree screen, including in 3D. It provides a powerful way to identify patterns, associations and anomalies in big data.\n\nWith its 12 levels, the building also houses collaborative theatres, event spaces, the Women in Engineering and IT Breakout Space, Electrical Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering Labs. There are many spaces for individual and collaborative study, including some on the floors below ground, such as the unique 'Ark' on level B1. All buildings are open to all students, regardless of their faculty, so feel free to use these informal study spaces.\n\nAnd let's not forget about Building 11's sustainability features! With a rooftop wind turbine, solar panels, water recycling and a recharging station for electric vehicles, about 20% of the building's energy is generated by the technology on the roof.\n\nAnd just outside the building is the Penny Lane laneway, which features a beautiful wall mural by local artist Ox King. Commissioned by UTS in 2019, the mural incorporates Australian native flora and fauna.\n\nSo there you have it, students. You may not have known, but this building was once home to the Sydney Morning Herald run by the Fairfax company and even served as the base for the Sydney Olympics Organising Committee!\n\nBut today, it's a hub for our Faculty of Health and Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and our main Student Centre. Let's take a look at the level 2 atrium which has won a prestigious award for its refurbishment.\n\nAs we enter the atrium, you'll notice the art deco style that was preserved during the transformation, and the light-filled six levels that were created. This building is not only rich in history but also in its facilities. Did you know, it has 16 nursing and midwifery simulation labs set up like actual hospital environments, providing hands-on experience to our future health professionals.\n\nAnd if you ever need any support with administration, just head to the Student Centre on level 2 where they offer information on fees and enrolments and even produce student cards! So, not only does this building have a rich history, but it's also equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to support our students in their studies. The building was opened in 2015 and is named after a former UTS Chancellor. It's often referred to as the \"Wave Building\". The building, together with Building 4 next door, houses the Faculty of Science.\n\nTake a moment to appreciate the building's sustainability features, including the green roof and terrace. Beds of native plants provide a habitat for inner-city birds and insects, while insulation regulates internal temperatures. Rainwater is collected and used for landscaping and toilet-flushing.\n\nWe are now on level 2 and in front of us is the Green Auditorium. This is the only lecture theater in the building and its lights are made from conical flasks, which are typically used in science labs. This space is designed in the UTS collaborative style with tables set up for groups.\n\nLet's take a few steps down and you'll find the Science Super Lab, a 52-meters-long lab that has space for up to 220 students. It was the first of its kind in Australia when it opened in 2014 and its specialist equipment and technology allow for up to 12 different classes to run at once.\n\nOpposite the Science Super Lab is ProtoSpace, a unique additive and advanced manufacturing facility offering cutting-edge 3D printing technologies and expertise to industry partners, academics and UTS students. This facility supports all aspects of the 3D manufacturing process, from component design to final product research and development.\n\nUnfortunately, level 0, which houses the Crime Simulation (CSI) Lab and the high-tech Biologics Innovation Facility, is not accessible. The CSI Lab is used by our Forensic Science students to recreate various crime scenes. The Biologics Innovation Facility is a secure, high-tech facility where specialist researchers work on biotech research and development.
