But before you enter turn and face away from the building, close your eyes and try to imagine this location before the arrival of your European settlers. The Turrbal and Jagera people lived, and educated, their young ones in the very area that you're standing in right now. This land is always been a place of learning. Now turn and face the imposing Forgan Smith building. Containing the beautiful law library and lecture theatres and academic offices, this building forms the largest side of what is known as the Great Court. Admire the inscriptions above the doors intended to strike both reverence and awe into those who enter. Enter through the front doors."},{"metadata":{"width":470,"height":640},"type":"img","version":1,"content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2F0ZzeitfnUoGLxBuS8C5p%2Fstop_0_2.png?alt=media&token=816b3296-2908-41cb-9f73-26916bce2c87"},{"type":"text","content":"Inside you'll see staircases and classrooms that haven't changed much in 100 years. Before entering the law library to admire a fabulous space dedicated to The Law (it is open to the public but remember students are studying here so be respectful) it's worth noting that for tens of thousands of years before these sandstone buildings were erected, First Nations Australians also taught thier Law in this area. When these buildings were built it was not generally accepted that indigenous Australians had a body of learning analogous to that of Europeans, however it's now known that as well as what we now think of as biology, geography, medicine and astronomy, knowledge of more esoteric matters such as psychology and religion were also taught in the surrounding area. The University has made recent huge steps in recognising this ancient learning and you'll see evidence of this in your travels."}]},{"address":"The University of Queensland, Saint Lucia QLD, Australia","location":{"longitudeDelta":0.0421,"latitudeDelta":0.0922,"latitude":-27.4975028,"longitude":153.0136905},"media":[{"metadata":{"width":642,"height":478},"type":"img","version":1,"content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2F0ZzeitfnUoGLxBuS8C5p%2Fstop_1_0.png?alt=media&token=3f204ac9-8f19-49cf-b8dd-2ebf600af764"},{"type":"text","content":"The great court is the heart of the University of Queensland and much loved by its students and academics. Walk with the river on your left, admiring the expensive houses on the other side of the river and the greenery and wildlife. Soon you will arrive at Eleanor Schonnell Bridge. Better known to locals as the Green Bridge. This 390 m bridge was opened in 2006 and is the first bridge in Australia exclusively designed for buses cyclists and pedestrians. Take a moment to consider that before European settlement, the First Nations people fished for eels and catfish in this river and harvested fruit and honey from the flowers of the plants which grow along it. It's humbling to remember that before, lecture theatres, desks and interactive whiteboards, even books, this was a place where knowledge was kept and passed on from elders and the knowledgeable, to those who would keep and build on that knowledge for the benefit of their society.
