It was named for Bennelong, one of two Aboriginal people (the other man was named Colebee) who served as liaisons between Australia’s first British settlers and the local population. The small building where Bennelong lived once occupied the site. In 1821 Fort Macquarie was built there (razed 1902). In 1947 the resident conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Eugene Goossens, identified the need of Australia’s leading city for a musical facility that would be a home not only to the symphony orchestra but also to opera and chamber music groups. The New South Wales government, agreeing that the city should aspire to recognition as a world cultural capital, gave official approval and in 1954 convened an advisory group, the Opera House Committee, to choose a site. At any time of day, you can follow a guide up the arches of the bridge to see panoramic views of Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Opera House. The bridge climbs at dawn, twilight and nighttime take three and a half hours. You can purchase a ticket to the main entrance and start your day at the world famous Taronga Zoo !\n\nWe started in Reptile World, where we somehow inadvertently went against (don't know how!!) when we were going against the flow of traffic but didn't think about it until they got there. I went out the door.\n\nIf you get the chance, be sure to watch one of the goalkeeper talks, the various talks they give out throughout the day. Or try one of the animal encounters. I would highly recommend the Wild Australian experience if you are traveling overseas; it's a good way to get up close to some of our favorite Australian animals and maybe learn a thing or 2.\n\nAfter hours of walking around you will feel quite hungry! We brought food because we thought we would plan ahead, but we ate it all and we were still hungry. There are one of several different areas around the zoo. You’ll get a more authentic, up-close-and-personal experience with the Australian animals here. If you want to see koalas, kangaroos, kookaburras, wombats, wallabies, echidnas, and Tasmanian devils (which are cuter than the name suggests), this is the zoo for you. You can sign up for personal encounters with many of the animals and receive a souvenir photo pack.\n\n"}]}]
