Yes, I invite you to stroll around one of the biggest and oldest graveyards in Tokyo. Do not be worried though. You will not attract any odd looks, as this place, and cemeteries in general, is a rather popular option for slow, meditative walks. You will see local elders, moms with children, office workers on a break (in the right time of a day) just strolling around besides you. The main street you are walking on even becomes crowded during sakura (cherry blossoms) season, as almost all the trees you now see are Japanese sakuras. \n\n### History\n\nYanaka cemetery has previously belonged to Tennoji temple, but un the end of 19th century it was nationalized as a part of a program of secularization of Japan. Here Japanese history buffs can find rest places of number of famous Japanese political, cultural, science figures. One of the most prominent being the rest place of the last Tokugawa shogun. \n### Good to know: \n*Remember, that it is still a spiritual place.* \nSo, do not: \n* behave loudly,\n* eat and drink while walking (a sip of water is fine); \n* leave any garbage behind;\n* step on any monuments. \n\nWhen you exit on the other side of the main street, you will start to see flower shops and traditional old architecture on both sides. Just keep going till the intersection (there will be a WC, if you need it ;) ). \nAfter that take your left and go down the street till the next intersection. There, on the opposite sides of the road, you will find two art galleries: *K's Green gallery* and *SCAI The Bathhouse*. \nBoth of the places are nice and worth popping by, but let me introduce **SCAI The Bathhouse** a bit more... This style was rather popular with bathhouses in the beginning of the 20th century as it implied, that bathhouse was something much more then just any earthly business. \nAnd in some sense it was in fact. Before electricity, improved fireproof building materials and private baths in just any apartment, bathhouses were where the soul of neighbourhood lived. People would visit this establishments almost every day, get naked in the company of their fellow citizens and have a nice, relaxing soak. Bathhouses were known as a place where all the social levels blended and social ties were fastened. \nNowadays, with the increasing of individualization in the society and a convenience of bathtubs, this places are loosing their role and business very fast. Most of Tokyo's local sentos (bathhouse in Japanese) are now closed down. Well, not the healthiest thing to eat, but a quite filling bite, if you are hungry. **You will find it just left behind the Yanaka ginza gate**. \n* **(Chonmage imo) Tamaru** (ちょんまげいも たまる) - Just some souvenir shops away from the grilled squid place also on your left, you will find a small café with somewhat hectic front door display. This is a mega famous and a \"must try\" street food stand in the street just a few steps further on the left (look for a cat picture on the sign). They serve soft spongy cakes in a form of cat tails (thus the name). Try one or several of the different types - the fame is deserved. \n* **Niku no Suzuki** (肉のすずき) - care for something meaty? *Niku no Suzuki* street food stand has you covered. Keep in mind, that a good practice is to walk on either side of the gates, not in the middle, as this space is reserved for deities. ;) \n\nNow you are in one of the most underrated places of Tokyo. Nezu shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Tokyo (present structure is from mid 18th century, which is OLD by Japanese standards), and has it all: red tori gate tunnel like in Kyoto's Fushimi Inari shrine, blooming Azalea garden, ponds, distinctive, red coloured, wooden architecture similar to one in Asakusa or even gorgeous Nikko Toshogu shrine. \n\nWhat it doesn't have is crowds. Exception may be the end of April - beginning of May, when locals come to see blooming azalea. Nevertheless, busy season can be an interesting experience in itself, as you will be able to see what Japanese festival (matsuri) is like - food, traditional music and dances. \n\n### Good to know: \n\n**Open**: Shrine shop and office is opened 9.00 to 17.00, but the grounds are available 27/7 \n**Admission**: usually **free**; small fee for gardens during azalea festival (around 3-4 USD). \n\n### What's next? \n\nAfter visiting Nezu shrine you have multiple transportation options: \n\n* From **Nezu station** (5 min. walk) - Tokyo Metro Chiyoda line will bring you to popular neighbourhoods of **Ueno**, **Akihabara**, **Imperial East gardens in Marunouchi**, **Omotesando/Harajuku/Meiji shrine**. Going to the opposit direction will lead you back to **Yanaka area** and will offer a transfer to JR Yamanote line among the others at Nishi-Nippori station. \n* **Todamae st.** (7 min.walk) - Tokyo Metro Namboku line offers connections to **Tokyo Dome** area, *Idabashi**, **Akasaka**, *Roppongi** (not the most central location though), **Meguro st.**. \n* **Hakusan st.** on Toei metro Mita line (15 min. walk) will get you to **Tokyo Dome city**, **Imperial East gardens**, **Zozo-ji temple** and **Meguro st.**, or **Sugamo** area in the opposite direction. \n* There are multiple bus routs nearby the shrine. Before electricity, improved fireproof building materials and private baths in just any apartment, bathhouses were where the soul of neighbourhood lived. You will find yourself in a narrow pedestrian only street densely lined with little shops: food, crafts, tourist memorabilia and more. Take your time to slowly walk down the street, tasting, trying and just taking in all that is around you. \n### Here are some recommendations, what to pay attention to: \n**Food**\n* **Ikayaki Yakiya** (いか焼やきや) - a small hole in the wall place that serves grilled squid in a butter and different condiments. This is a place where you can sit and try some of Japanese traditional deserts: red bean paste, shaved ice (in summer) with various toppings, sesame covered mochi (rice flower cake), caramelized sweet potato etc. They serve regular meals as well and offer take out. \n* **Yanaka Shipoya** (やなかしっぽや) - literally \"Cat tail's shop\". They sell different types of deep fried potato + meat cutlets, meat skewers, grilled meats. During colder months they also have *amazake* a kind of sweet fermented rice drink (non-alcoholic). \n\n**Souvenirs** \n* **Bamboo Craft Shop Midoriya** (竹工芸 翠屋) - just next to the gates to the shopping street you will find a shop of all bamboo made. There you can find small key chains, chopsticks, earrings, baskets, dishes etc. All hand made. \n* **Goto no ame** (後藤の飴) - a small shop selling packaged Japanese candies, rice crackers and other snacks and sweets. Good for a little gift for those back home. \n\n### Good to know: \nOpening times of the shops may vary, but generally they close with the dusk, so do not be too late. \n\nWhen you reach the end of the street turn left and go down Yomise street. There will be multiple shops and cafes/restaurants there as well. \n\nWhen you reach the traffic lights cross the street and continue on a narrow road strait ahead. You will be walking on a **Snake road**. \n \n"},{"type":"link","content":"https://jw-webmagazine.com/yanaka-ginza-tokyos-best-old-fashioned-shopping-street-db7e586241f1/"}]},{"address":"Hebimichi","location":{"longitudeDelta":0.10218818160659443,"latitudeDelta":0.09219986310369421,"latitude":35.72190471142035,"longitude":139.76345615},"media":[{"metadata":{"width":473,"height":667},"type":"img","version":1,"content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2FgOcR0yeb1Ii27dCkFXC9%2FHebimichi1.png?alt=media&token=9019e3ff-3b27-465f-9b82-85f78f0e8dd1"},{"metadata":{"width":361,"height":518},"type":"img","version":1,"content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2FgOcR0yeb1Ii27dCkFXC9%2FHebimichi2.png?alt=media&token=c7ed9584-b3fe-4617-b854-81ac1e8359ff"},{"type":"text","content":"# Snake road (Hebi michi) \n\nThe narrow street you are walking on now is known as a Snake road because of it's winding shape. Nevertheless, the reason this street has this unusual shape has nothing to do with serpents. The truth is - you are walking on a river now. This road, as many more around Tokyo has been made by streaming a river into the pipes underground. As, by the time the river was imprisoned, there already was a pretty dense development, a new road just followed the stream. \n\nNow Snake's road is a quite residential street with mostly private houses from both sides of it. Walk it, check how they roll in shitamachi. \n\nWen you reach the point where the street becomes straight and considerably wider, * turn to a small alley to your right. When the alley ends, * turn right and take the first left. You must find yourself at the wide busy road. * Cross the intersection and keep straight until you reach a big, red Tori gate. That would be the entrance to our last stop. \n\n"},{"type":"link","content":"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W61RGhkLSKU"}]},{"address":"Nezu Shrine","location":{"longitudeDelta":0.10218818160659443,"latitudeDelta":0.09219986310369421,"latitude":35.72007006922489,"longitude":139.7609066},"media":[{"metadata":{"width":372,"height":421},"type":"img","version":1,"content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2FgOcR0yeb1Ii27dCkFXC9%2FNezu2.png?alt=media&token=d39cf463-5cfd-42ac-863f-1c02ff93f10e"},{"metadata":{"width":488,"height":247},"type":"img","version":1,"content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2FgOcR0yeb1Ii27dCkFXC9%2FNezu_shrine1.png?alt=media&token=fd3d5580-87b2-44ad-8ed3-798cc864b164"},{"metadata":{"width":485,"height":340},"type":"img","version":1,"content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2FgOcR0yeb1Ii27dCkFXC9%2FNezu3.png?alt=media&token=8a65b8fb-c5d6-4894-8fb4-ea4722970be7"},{"type":"text","content":"# Nezu Shrine \n\nGo through a big red Tori gate. You may be interested in routs Nr. **51** (to Akihabara st.), **43** (to Tokyo station), **60**/ **58** (to Ueno park) \n \n\n\n"},{"type":"link","content":"https://www.japan-experience.com/all-about-japan/tokyo/temples-shrines/nezu-shrine"}]}]
