Born in 1904 to a Japanese poet father and an American educator mother, Isamu's early childhood was defined by a tumultuous domestic drama of interracial couples and acts of adultery by his father. \n\nGiven that it was the height of the Russo-Japanese War, Isamu's mother followed her husband to live in Japan during their early days. Throughout many of Isamu's works, there are touches of Japanese influences that permeates many of his sculptures. Isamu was sent back to the US in 1918 before his mother and his sister returned in 1920 and convinced Isamu to pursue art over medical school.
