With its famous crown, you can easily find it on the Royal Mile between Edinburgh Castle and HolyroodHouse Palace.\n\nThe attraction of the High Kirk of St Giles, as its name suggests, is its exquisite stained-glass windows featuring the famous Scots. Another splendid feature you might miss are the intricate carvings on the roof of the Chapel of the Order of the Thistle (Scottish chivalry).\n\nLook for the bronze statue of John Knox, the religious reformer who was closely associated with St Giles and the founding of St Giles as the birthplace of Scottish Presbyterianism. Another unusual memorial that deserves attention is the 3-legged bronze milking chair in memory of Jenny Geddes, who is said to have started a riot here on July 23, 1637. The point is King Charles I (now head of the Church of England) wanted to impose an English style of word on Scotland, but the Scots opposed this because it would return them to a system similar to the Catholic church. Roman Catholicism. So when the Headmaster of St Giles School started reading his newly released English prayer book, Jenny threw her stool at his head and a riot ensued.\n\nThere is a good coffee shop downstairs.\n\nIf you search for the square at the west entrance of St Giles (i.e. facing the castle), you'll find a heart-shaped emblem placed on the cobbled surface of the sidewalk. This is the \"Heart of Midlothian\" and is located at the entrance to the old Tolbooth building. Tolbooth was used as a tax collector and was also used as a prison for those sentenced to death. As you can imagine, it's not a common place and a tradition has sprung up on the builders' steps. The tradition continues to this day and some locals will still spit on the heart symbol.\n\nTo the south of St Giles, there is a car parking area. This used to be the graveyard of St Giles and in parking lot 23 you will find a small plaque plugged into the runway marking the approximate location of the tomb of the religious reformer John Knox. His dying wish is to be buried near St Giles, but he might want another if he realizes he will be buried under a car park."},{"type":"link","content":"https://stgilescathedral.org.uk/"},{"metadata":{"width":576,"height":1024},"type":"video","content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2FQgTafv61Pp6LinEcuWgd%2FSnaptik_6959242249293139206_maddie.mp4?alt=media&token=8cd07830-8d55-452a-8bdf-53b269d355ad"}]},{"address":"Camera Obscura & World of Illusions","location":{"longitudeDelta":0.14321712068773834,"latitudeDelta":0.09219986310369421,"latitude":55.94892117349828,"longitude":-3.1957028999999926},"media":[{"type":"text","content":"# Camera Obscura & World of Illusions"},{"metadata":{"width":580,"height":580},"type":"img","version":1,"content":"https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/freeguides-prod.appspot.com/o/assets%2Ftours%2FQgTafv61Pp6LinEcuWgd%2F8734e7498ff017cfff5e38395d2534b1a9b5deb1.jpg?alt=media&token=3dc7e973-cf1f-49e9-9939-7d501800bff8"},{"type":"link","content":"https://www.camera-obscura.co.uk/"},{"type":"text","content":"Experience and participate in more than 100 illusions and breathe in the fresh air on our beautiful Rooftop Terrace, which offers the most breathtaking 360-degree views of Edinburgh.
