The iconic beach, a 1.5km stretch of golden sand lined by Norfolk Pines, is where a submerged reef creates waves prized by top surfers.\n\nHere you can join a learn to surf class, and launch yourself into a rip to catch one of Manly's smooth rolling waves. Need to cool off?\nYou can enter the water of Cabbage Tree Bay from Halfway beach where there are steps down onto the sand. Once entering the water you will find an aquatic reserve packed with marine life.\n\nRecreational activities are alllowed in Cabbage Tree bay such as swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving and underwater photography. More than 150 species of fish dwell in the reserve including iconic species such as blue groupers, giant cuttlefish, wobbygongs and the resident green turtle. Protected and threatened species also include weedy seadragons, elegant wrasse and grey nurse sharks. Last time I went snorkelling here, I spotted a blue grouper swimming just a few feet away. In this small secluded cove, you'll find much calmer waters than at Manly. Cabbage Tree Bay extends into Shelly so when swimming be sure to duck under the water and keep an eye out for marine life.\n\nTake a walk around the bush track which hugs the headland offering spectacular views of North Head and the Northern Beaches. Shelly beach has showers, toilets and a cafe along with two free electric barbecues, perfect for that family picnic. For a more formal option, there is a cafe on the beach named The Boathouse. For dessert you can pick up a flying fox ice cream, from the ice cream stand right outside the Boathouse.
