Dinis Fountains date fron 1490. They were built so explorers could get water for their voyages.\nThe round tower dates from 1540 and was initially built to protect the people working in Funchal's beach.\n\nAfter a violent Privateer Attack in 1566, the Fort was finally built.\n\nIn the 18th Century, part of the Fort was turned into a Palace to properly receive high dignitaries from Europe. \n\nWhen Madeira received a Portuguese Royal visit in 1901, the Royal family was accommodated here.\n\nRua das Fontes was burried in the 1940's during the construction of Avenida do Mar. \nA garden was created here.\nThe Gargen was removed after the devastating flood Madeira suffered in 2010 and the cobble street recovered to what it used to be like in the early 20th lived a 48 years long dictatorship.\nIt started as a military dictatorship in 1926.\n\nOliveira de Salazar was the men in power from 1931 until 1968, year in which he suffered an accident and was then replaced by Marcelo Caetano, who ruled until 1974.\nPortuguese man fought on the colonial wars, forced by the regime to maintain Angola, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau and parts of India under Portuguese control.\nIn the 1970's, some man in the Portuguese Armed Forces started a movement to overthrow the regime.\n\nThe Carnation Revolution, as it became known, happenned on April 25th 1974.\nMarcelo Caetano was arrested in Lisbon and sent the next day to Funchal to be imprisioned in Palácio de São Loureço.\nHowever, once in Funchal, he was allowed out of his prision and family members visited every day.\n\nThe local population was unhappy with this and many came to the Avenue to show him despise and to tell him that the Island was not the garbage bin of mainland Portugal.\nAbout 1 month was the Customs' House from the 16th to the 20th Century.\nIn the 17th Centura, a gate in the defensive wall was built in from of the Customs House and it became mandatory for all the ships to disembark here ti avoid smuggling. \n\nThe Old Customs House was abandoned in the 20th Century with the costruction of the new one.\n\nIn 1976, Madeira became as Autonomous Region and in the 80's this building was chosen to install the Legislative Assembley. \n\nThe remodulation privileged the 16th Century building and the plenary room was built on top of the old battery.\n\nThis Legislative Assembley was inaugurated in December 1987.\n\nThe Statue is called The Trilogy of Powers and it pays tribute to the main powers of democratic governance.\nEach of the 3 women are representing the Executive, Legislative and Judicial Powers, powers Madeira only gained after it became an Autonomous was one of the main entrances of the city on the old Defensive Wall of Funchal.\n\nThe gate would close on a schedule previously set by the authorities and would open at the break of dawn.\n\nPortugal implemented its first Republic in 1910 and a lot of the younger republicans wanted to get rid of everything that reminded them of Monarchy.\n\nThe Republicans demanded the immediate demolition of this gate, claiming that the area needed to be clean, as there was a Cholera outbreak in Funchal, however, the real reasons were political.\nThe original gate was demolished in 1911. It is said that the first fisherman's poncha was done on a fishing boat. It was a street of prostitution, drugs and crime.\nActually, by the end of the 19th Century, Rua Santa Maria was considered the worst street in Funchal, an infected street. The defensive wall was an obstacle to the rainwater that would accumulate on this street.\n\nIn 2010, a photographer took photos of the abandoned houses’ doors. A son of an English Merchant used to bring a football when he came back to the island on vacation and he used to play with his friends.\nFor decades, football was only a sport for the elites.\nIt is said that, in the early 20th Century, a young man from the old town, convinced one of the sailors of an English Vessel to give him his football.\nThey started playing in the Old Town and, shortly after, Marítimo was born.\nThe word Marítimo means Maritime and the club was named like this because most of the first “professional” footballers had their day jobs related to the sea. 1803. a devastating flood happened in Madeira, killing hundrends of people and leaving many homeless.\n\nIn the town of Machico, in the Eastern part of Madeira, there are the Cavalum Caves, said to be home of a devil with a horse's body and bat wings.\n\nThe population of Machico claims that Cavalum came out of his caves on October 9th 1803, knocked on a church's door and told God he was going to taunt Machico's population.\n\nGod shut the door, saying he had no time for Cavalum's jokes.\n\nThen, Cavalum went up a hill, summoned the clouds, it starting raining very heavily and Cavalum laughed while the population was struggling to save their lives.\n\nThe population, in despair, prayed and asked God for help.\n\nGod intervened later, when an image of Christ in the Cross was taken from one of the Chapels.\n\nThen, God trapped the devil back in his cave andsummoned the sun, making the storm stop.\n This imaged of Christ in the Cross was recovered later, still intact, which was considered a miracle after all the destruction.\n\nThis painting above represents the 16th, the black death arrived to Madeira.\nIt started in March 1521 and prophylactic measures were taken since then.\nThe people infected were sent to outside the city walls, the dead would be burried at night, on the churchyards, only with the presenceof the people responsible for the burial.\n\nTo face the plague, the clergyman, city councillors, doctors and the population of Funchal gather in the Cathedral to choose a Saint to protect city.\n15 holy names were placed in a boy's hat and one was drawn by luck.\nSão Tiago Menor, Saint James Minor was the chosen saint and chapel was build in his honour.\n\nHowever, after 17 years of severe prophylactic measures and the big devotion to the saint, the plague continued to rage on.\n\nIn 1538, it was decided to end all the restrictions. \nThe sick would be cured at home and the dead burried inside the churches, during the day, with a proper funeral.\n\nOn May 1st 1538, the population on Funchal came in procession to this church to ask Saint James to do in Heaven what they couldn't do on Earth: to stop the disease.\n\nIt is said that shortly after, the sick got better and the plague soon disappeared from
