About this experience
Khunjerab Pass is a high mountain pass located in the Karakoram Mountains, at an elevation of 4,693 meters (15,397 feet) above sea level. It is the highest paved international border crossing in the world and connects Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan region with China's Xinjiang province.
The pass is situated on the ancient Silk Road, a historic trade route that connected China with Central Asia and Europe. The area surrounding the pass is known for its stunning natural beauty, with towering snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and crystal-clear lakes. It is also home to a diverse range of wildlife, including snow leopards, Himalayan ibex, and Marco Polo sheep.
Start your journey in the town of Karimabad in Hunza. This is a popular tourist destination and has plenty of accommodation options for all budgets.
From Karimabad, you'll need to hire a car or jeep to take you to the Khunjerab Pass. You can either book a private car or join a shared taxi.
The journey from Hunza to Khunjerab Pass is around 200 kilometers and takes around 6-7 hours to complete. The road is narrow and winding, but the views are breathtaking. You'll pass through several small towns and villages on the way, so make sure you have plenty of time to stop and explore.
As you approach the Khunjerab Pass, you'll start to notice the landscape becoming more barren and rocky. The pass itself is located at an altitude of 4,693 meters above sea level and is the highest paved international border crossing in the world.
Once you reach the pass, you'll have the opportunity to take some amazing photos and enjoy the stunning views. There are also several souvenir shops and food stalls where you can buy local handicrafts and snacks.
